TheDailyBoard: Hello Basik, how is it going in Italia? Is that crazy hot like here in France?
Basik: Ciao guys! Yes, it’s definitely super hot here too! I’m melting.

TDB: I’d like to find out who you are. How does you become Basik?
BSK: I started doing graffiti at the beginning of the Nineties, when I was about 12 years old. After more than ten years spent writing my name I realized I was bored and limited, doing the same thing over and over, so I progressively switched to something different, changing the subject and media but without losing the love for painting walls.

Basik was originally a secondary graffiti tag that I started using at the end of the 90’s and then decided to keep as signature for my further projects.

I liked how the word Basik sounds and I eventually got attached to it.

TDB: How did you end up painting hands?
BSK: It’s a part of a long work on hands’ gestures and their meaning and value started around 2007. My major inspirations were the symbolism of hands in religious art and the famed common gestures of my land, which truly are a second language alongside Italian, ah ah!

I found hands were very expressive subjects to be depicted, as intense as a face. In the beginning gestures was part of larger subjects but I slowly focused on painting them alone. I eventually thought they fit very well on walls.

TDB: You’re first of all a graffiti artist. What do you like in the skateboard deck support?
BSK: I’d say I’m not a graffiti artist anymore. I could be catalogued as a street artist, but I really don’t like all the confusion about the word “street art” nowadays, as the media call every piece of art that pops on the streets with that name and it’s extremely superficial to ignore the background of all the artists who work outdoor in that way.

That being said, I feel I’m more likely a contemporary artist, with a focus on muralism, among other things.

The interesting side of using a deck as support is definitely the narrow shape, which is a challenging limit. You always have to create a subject that fits this main feature. That’s why I designed an artwork inspired by the tree of life, something with its origin point at the bottom, plus a vertical development.

TDB: By the way, I just saw your last mural work post on Pow Wow Hawaii. Congrats! Looks like it’s doing pretty well. Without going in details, can you live with your art right now?
BSK: Thanks! The last mural you saw on Pow Wow has been a sort of experiment, as I used a broader colour palette and a more realistic approach on some details rather than my usual essential black and white figures.

Living only with my art is a bit hard, but it’s just a part of what I like to do at the moment, as I also work on several things such as commercial illustrations and a bit of graphic design.

TDB: Concerning your last board collab with Bonobolabo “A Path Of Struggle Through A Kingdom And Its Crown”, you put gold sheet on it. That’s brilliant! How did you do this?
BSK: I used a traditional gilding technique, the very same you can see in the making of golden frames. You have to put a tiny glue layer first, then pull a gold foil (22k gold or fake gold, depending on how much money you want to spend), press it well and wipe the abundances.

It’s an annoying and tricky process and it takes a lot of patience and knowledge. I’m still far from being a master of this technique.

TDB: Name 3 artists you really love:
BSK: Duccio Di Buoninsegna, Egon Schiele and Georg Baselitz.
Regarding contemporary urban art: Erosie, Axel Void and Mobstr.

TDB: So you had an exhibition at bonobolabo not long ago. Do you have other exhibitions or projects coming?
BSK: I had an exhibition at Bonobolabo during last winter. I worked on a whole series inspired by the 80’s and 90’s classics of Skateboard graphics.

I’m currently working on a nice print collab that should be out in autumn in the States. Besides, I’m into a new studio series about saints, more structured and colorful than my usual black & white. Something related to my tribute piece of Stefano Maderno’s Saint Cecilia made in Mutonia, the one appeared on Pow Wow’s account you mentioned a few questions before.
